El antecedente filosófico es antiguo: Spinoza, en 1677, define a Dios-Naturaleza como causa sui — causa de sí. Hegel piensa el espíritu como movimiento que se engendra al pensarse. La idea late en silencio durante siglos: hay algo que no encaja en el esquema lineal "causa → efecto, y se acabó". The philosophical antecedent is ancient: Spinoza, in 1677, defines God-Nature as causa sui — cause of itself. Hegel thinks the spirit as a movement that begets itself in the act of thinking itself. The idea pulses quietly through centuries: something doesn't fit in the linear "cause → effect, that's it" scheme.
En 1972, los biólogos chilenos Humberto Maturana y Francisco Varela acuñan autopoiesis — "auto-producción". Una célula viva es una red de procesos químicos que fabrica sus propios componentes, incluida la membrana que la separa del exterior. A living cell is a network of chemical processes that fabricates its own components, including the membrane that separates it from the outside. Heinz von Foerster, from second-order cybernetics, brings the principle to the observer: whoever describes the system also produces it. Morin synthesises: the recursive doesn't merely regulate — it begets.

Una célula viva no recibe sus moléculas desde fuera — las sintetiza con procesos internos que, a su vez, dependen de moléculas que ella misma sintetizó. Vivir y auto-producirse son, para Maturana, la misma operación. A living cell doesn't receive its molecules from outside — it synthesises them through internal processes that, in turn, depend on molecules it itself synthesised. There's no "first brick" laid by an outsider. The system holds together by continuously producing itself: if it stops self-producing, it dies. To live and to self-produce are, for Maturana, the same operation.
Causa y efecto recíprocosReciprocal cause and effect
En el bucle retroactivo, el efecto modifica a la causa. En el recursivo, el efecto genera a la causa. Los individuos producen la sociedad — con sus actos, palabras, instituciones. In the recursive, the effect generates the cause. Individuals produce society — with their acts, words, institutions. But that society, once produced, produces individuals: language, ideas, cultural body, a place. Each is cause and consequence of the other, at the same time, with no way to point to who started.

El bucle no tiene diseñador externo. La organización emerge del bucle mismo: la vuelta produce la siguiente vuelta, y de esa concatenación nace la forma. Organisation emerges from the loop itself: each turn produces the next turn, and from that chaining the form is born. The brain produces the thoughts that produce the brain. The conversation produces the language that produces the conversation. It's a genetic mechanism in the strict sense — not metaphorical: the loop brings into being.

Hablas castellano: lo usas, lo deformas, le prestas palabras de otras lenguas, inventas inflexiones. Estás produciendo el idioma, aunque sea en milímetros. Pero ese idioma, antes que tú, ya te estaba produciendo: te dio las palabras con las que piensas, los tiempos verbales con los que recuerdas, las metáforas con las que sueñas. Tú haces al idioma; el idioma te hace a ti; y ninguno empezó primero. You speak English: you use it, bend it, borrow words from other tongues, invent inflections. You're producing the language, even if only by millimetres. But that language, before you, was already producing you: it gave you the words you think with, the tenses you remember in, the metaphors you dream with. You make the language; the language makes you; and neither started first.
Biología — la célula que se sostieneBiology — the cell that holds itself
Una bacteria fabrica miles de proteínas por segundo. Cada proteína se sintetiza con enzimas que, a su vez, son proteínas que la propia bacteria fabricó. La membrana que la separa del medio está hecha de moléculas que la bacteria sintetizó desde dentro — y esa membrana es lo que permite que el adentro siga siendo adentro. La célula es su propio efecto y su propia causa. Es el ejemplo más limpio del principio. A bacterium manufactures thousands of proteins per second. Each protein is synthesised with enzymes that are, in turn, proteins the bacterium itself made. The membrane separating it from the medium is built from molecules the bacterium synthesised from within — and that membrane is what allows the inside to keep being inside. The cell is its own effect and its own cause. It's the cleanest example of the principle.
Sistema — la economía que se inventaSystem — the economy that invents itself
El dinero vale porque la gente cree que vale. La creencia produce el valor; el valor producido refuerza la creencia. Pero hay más: las instituciones financieras, una vez creadas, producen agentes (empresas, profesiones, hábitos de consumo) que a su vez sostienen y reproducen esas instituciones. La economía no es un objeto que alguien diseñó: es un bucle recursivo que se inventa a sí mismo en cada operación. Money has value because people believe it has value. The belief produces the value; the produced value reinforces the belief. But there's more: financial institutions, once created, produce agents (firms, professions, consumption habits) that in turn sustain and reproduce those institutions. The economy isn't an object someone designed: it's a recursive loop that invents itself in every transaction.

Morin toma el lenguaje técnico de Maturana y Varela (autopoiesis) y lo desplaza al terreno antropológico y social. Donde los biólogos hablaban de moléculas y membranas, Morin habla de actos y culturas. La fórmula "productos y productores" funda — junto con el bucle retroactivo — la primera ruptura seria con el paradigma lineal de causa. Where the biologists spoke of molecules and membranes, Morin speaks of acts and cultures. The "products and producers" formula founds — together with the retroactive loop — the first serious break with the linear paradigm of cause.

¿Y la libertad? Si soy a la vez producto y productor de lo que me rodea, ¿dónde queda mi agencia? La trampa es leer el bucle como prisión. En realidad, lo recursivo habilita la agencia: precisamente porque produces lo que te produce, cada acto tuyo deja huella en la matriz que volverá a producirte. No hay margen de maniobra fuera del bucle — pero hay margen dentro. And freedom? If I'm at once product and producer of what surrounds me, where does my agency live? The trap is to read the loop as a prison. Actually, the recursive enables agency: precisely because you produce what produces you, every act of yours leaves a mark on the matrix that will produce you again. There's no leeway outside the loop — but there is leeway inside.

Changing something recursive is hard because any attempt is already part of the loop. The culture you'd like to transform shaped you: your tools to transform it are cultural. The exits on offer are usually false. Real intervention works through small, sustained shifts — changes in what gets reproduced each turn, not a foundational blow that breaks the loop.
